One of the most obvious signs that a drain is blocked is if your toilet, shower, bath or sinks are draining slowly. If a blockage is particularly bad, water may not drain away at all. If just one of these things is having issues, then the blockage is likely in the fixture itself. However, if all of them are backed up, then the blockage is most likely to be in the sewer drain. The toilet is often the main driver for a blockage – if flushing the toilet causes water to rise in the shower, or running taps causes the water in the toilet to rise, then you've got a blocked drain on your hands. Essentially, if any water-based appliances are causing water to appear elsewhere when used, there's a problem. Don't forget to check external drains and manhole covers (from the outside – you should never go inside manholes) on your property – if there's a blockage, water will start to rise here too.The smells
The most unpleasant symptom of all – foul smells are a dead giveaway for a blockage. If something has blocked the drain and begun to rot, you will certainly know about it. The bad smell may well begin to occur before any visual symptoms emerge, so if you start to catch whiffs of something being a little bit off then don't ignore it.The sounds
Finally, if your pipes and fixtures sound different to usual, it could be an indication of a blockage. Gurgling noises from drains, plug holes, toilet flushes and pipes are early warning signs – the sound is created when air trapped in the pipes by the blockage is displaced and pushed up through the system. Any one of these symptoms on their own is cause for concern, but if you're noticing two – or even all three – then you may well have a plumbing emergency on your hands.Preparing pipes and drains for winter

At the end of summer it pays to take a trip around your property, inspecting while taps or amenities are flowing, to see if there are any leakages in your property. If you find any, patch them up using a patch kit. If the pipe services your heating or water mains, you should use the services of a professional – repairing these with DIY kits can be dangerous.Latent heating
One of the easiest ways you can prevent frost damage in your home, especially if you have undertaken the previous steps but still want to err on the side of caution, is to keep your heating on at a low level throughout the winter months. This actually shouldn't result in a higher heating bill as stop-start periods of heating and sudden cooling will require more energy than a steady, lukewarm state.Be draught-aware
Small gaps between masonry or under doorways – particularly in the garage – can quickly cool down and freeze any at-risk pipes in the home. Plug these up using insulation, wood or plastic, although don't extend this to any exterior vents such as those connected to the heating system unless you don't plan on using said appliance over the winter.How to get rid of unwanted fat

There are many reasons why a drain or gully blocks up. Sometimes this can be prevented by taking the time to wash out & clean the chamber or gully. Here at Urgent Drain Care we have all the mechanical & hand held equipment at hand to deal with any Emergency such as a Blocked Drain Blocked Toilet, Blocked Sink, or Shower. We often only take notice of a manhole or the service pipes below ground when a blockage occurs, but drains and drainage systems are an integral part of every house and place of work. The top Three main reasons are as follows;
Blocked Gully's
A blocked Gully or Gully's can easily get blocked by leaves or a build up of fat or dish washer cleaning products. The blockages can then cause a blockage to the connecting pipes within the chamber's causing a back up, and then eventually a blockage to the whole system. The removal of the Grating and cleaning several times a year can lower the chances of a blockage. At Urgent Drain Care we carry out regular maintenance programmes to both Residential & Commercial Clients alike.Blocked Sinks & Pipe-work
All sorts of items including foods, detergents and waste products get washed down sinks . The majority of pipe-work which serve sinks and wastes is usually only 35mm in diameter. Waste traps such as P-Traps U-Traps are fitted below the sink and need regular cleaning, in some cases once per month. At Urgent Drain Care we carry all the tools of the trade to undertake problem blockages to sinks , such as drain snakes & Ridgid Drill & attachments to clear that blockage. Again the blockage could lead to further problems below the surface into the main chambers. More info on our blocked sink page hereBlocked Toilets, Drains & Manhole Chambers
A blocked Toilet or Toilets both on the Ground & first floors, can be a real inconvenience. And sometimes the only way to un-block this is by Drain Rods or drain Jetting equipment, the amount of equipment that is required to service or clear a blockage can run in to thousands of pounds, a typical vehicle fitted with all the operational equipment can typically cost in excess of £40k . Toilets usually block when something has been flushed away and gets caught in the pipe-work/ sewer pipes. The main causes can be face wipes/ nappy's cloth materials, to name but a few. regular Drain De-scaling and maintenance to the system will reduce the chances of a potential blockage. Also by not flushing down the toilet some of the items previously mentioned will reduce blockages. Other causes can be poorly laid waste pipes, incorrect levels of pipes and chambers, and lack of routine maintenance. Often the manhole chamber is built from brick-work and this could get dislodged and drop into the waste pipe / chamber. Remember 9 times out of 10 your manholes & chambers are linked to your next door neighbours houses, and although you may be carrying out regular maintenance are they?.![Urgent Drain Care 4](https://urgentdraincare.ie/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/services.jpg)
